General Advice:
Stair carpets should be laid with adequate protection
on the nosing of the stairs. A good contract quality underlay
will provide this protection and should be used. Fomalux
is one example of such an underlay and is recommended
due to it's dense construction of crumb rubber base and
felt pad top layer.
The stair nosing must be smooth and rounded. Sharp angle
nosings may cause unneccessary rapid wear.
Stair runners should be lifted and moved periodically
to even out the point of wear. When measuring, allow for
this by adding the length of one extra step to the total
length of each flight.
Low pin gripper rod must be used with all flatweave runners.
Once the fitting is completed, all gripper pins must be
dressed down so that they cannot be felt through the carpet.
On staircrases with winding steps, fitting should begin
at the bottom of each flight, working upwards to the top.

Fitting instructions:
1.) Cut lengths of low pin gripper rod 4cm narrower than
the width of your stair runner (2cm each side). This will
stop the gripper from showing at each side of the runner.
Fix the gripper rod to the bottom of riser and the back
of the tread approximately 1cm away from the crease of
the step. |
 |
| 2.) Cut underlay pieces the same width as the gripper
rod along the tread of the step but angled from underneath
the nosing down the face of the riser. |
 |
| 3.) Fit the underlay pieces snug up to the edges of
the gripper rod. |
 |
| 4.) Lay the carpet working from the bottom upwards.
Start by folding the extra length back under the bottom
piece of gripper and up behind the front layer of carpet. |
 |
5a.) For Velvet pile runners or velvet and flatweave
with stair rods: Work upwards applying lots of even tension
and ensure gripper pins are holding the runner securely.
|
 |
| 5b.) For Flatweave runners without stair rods: Use the
"back tack" method of fixing to create an invisible fold
that ensures secure and even fixing at the crease of each
step. |
 |
| 6.) Once complete, "dress down" the pins of
the gripper rod so that they are not felt through the
carpet. |
